Very Rare and Clean Strike

This folded letter, dated August 21, 1850, was privately carried by Colonel Hiram Favor from St. John, NB to Eastport, ME on the steamship Maid of Erin and then on to Boston by Favor aboard the steamship Admiral. The folded letter entered the mails at Boston where it received the red "STEAM" straightline and the 26 AUG Boston circular datestamp on the front. The rectangular handstamp was put on the cover by Favor to indicate his carriage of the letter. The rectangular handstamp was short lived since Favor soon moved from State Street in Boston to Court Street.
