1147 imagePomeroy's Letter Express, Red "Paid" and Red "2" Handstamps, on 1844 Folded Letter, Durham to Albany
Newly Discovered Pomeroy Handstamp

Illustrated and Discussed in A Newly Discovered Pomeroy Handstamp by John Bowman and William Sammis Folded letter datelined July 10, 1844, addressed to W.H. Van Zandt, Chief Clerk, State Banking Department, Albany, New York, signed by Platt Adams of Durham, New York. Red "Paid" handstamp with lines above and below and red "2" handstamp struck upside down on front, applied by two different handstamps in differing shades of red. The red "2" is identified in Bowman and Sammis as a previously unrecorded marking, attributed to Pomeroy's Albany office as a handstamp indicating a two-cent local delivery charge. Adams is confirmed as Postmaster of Durham, New York, a town on Pomeroy's New York City to Albany route. File fold between the two markings.

2001 image1515 Bergamo, Republic of Venice, Italy, "Cito" Special Delivery Stampless Folded Letter to Lodi
A Very Early Form of Express Letter from the Rectors of Bergamo Following the Battle of Marignano

Stampless folded letter datelined Bergamo, October 20, 1515 with two stirrups and "cito" repeated five times at right to indicate haste. In Latin the phrase, "Cito Cito Citissime" represents a superlative escalation of speed (fast, faster, fastest). Docketing with manuscript endorsement translated to, "Bergamo sends letters of the Archbishop of Lodi. Read to the Council." Written in a combination of abbreviated Latin and Italian to the Most Excellent Lords Captains of the Most Excellent Council of Lodi and written by the Rectors of Bergamo, the joint magistrates governing the city under Venetian rule. The sender acknowledges receipt of letters at the third and fifth hours of the night, encloses a directive to  Ambrose of Florence, identified within the letter as ambassador of His Most Christian Majesty, and assures the recipients that all communications will be forwarded with proper circumspection. The letter was written five weeks after the Battle of Marignano (September 13–14, 1515), in which Francis I of France defeated the Swiss confederate forces and seized the Duchy of Milan, situating Lodi and Bergamo within the diplomatic crosscurrents of the Italian Wars.

2011 image1691 Topsfield, Massachusetts, Stampless Folded Letter, Written by John Gould, Accuser at the Salem Witch Trials
Written Three Months Before the Salem Witch Trials Began

Stampless letter datelined December 29, 1691, written and signed by John Gould of Topsfield, Massachusetts. This letter is written just three months before the Salem witch trials began in February 1692. The writer is John Gould of Topsfield, aged 56 in 1692, brother of Priscilla Gould, the first wife of John Wildes of Topsfield. After Priscilla's death in 1663, John Wildes remarried Sarah Averill within seven months, a remarriage the Gould family resented and which produced a multi-decade feud. By 1692, John Gould and his sister Mary Gould Reddington had been spreading allegations of witchcraft against Sarah Wildes for more than twenty years. When the Salem accusations erupted in the spring of 1692, John Gould was a sworn deponent against Sarah Wildes, recounting incidents his deceased sister had attributed to her and describing supernatural occurrences with a hay cart that he believed were the work of witchcraft. The Goulds were related by marriage to the Putnam family of Salem Village, the principal accusers in the trials. Sarah Wildes was tried, convicted, and executed by hanging at Gallows Hill on July 19, 1692.
