6044 imageSan Francisco, California, 1850 Pre-Statehood Stampless Cover to New York, Orange-Red Circular Datestamp, "40" Rate Handstamp
Scarce Pre-Statehood California Usage with Early Sacramento Reference

San Francisco, pre-statehood California stampless cover, Jun 1 (1850) large orange-red circular datestamp with integral rate 40c due, transcontinental rate to New York City. Given 40c rate period, cover could be 1850 or 1851, however this large circular datestamp usage aligns to 1850 for June (was not in use a year later), pencil docketing on reverse states "letter dated 5/31/1850" consistent with assessment of circular datestamp, although letter no longer present. Manuscript "On Front between I and J streets, Sacramento City" referring to writer's location in early Sacramento, which was on the waterfront in 1850.References: View of Sacramento from the Foot of J street in 1849(Image 1) (Image 2)

Addressed to Mother of William Van Voorhees, California's First Postal Agent

San Francisco, California stampless cover, Jan 1 (1851) orange-red circular datestamp with matching 40c rate and PAID handstamps on New Year's Day cover, transcontinental rate to New York City. Some edge wear and toning. Manuscript "Carolina, Dec 24, 1850" endorsement for Pacific Mail Steam Ship Carolina departing Jan 1, 1851. Addressed to William Van Voorhees' mother (Margaret) in New York City. Van Voorhees was the special postal agent sent to California to establish the West Coast mail system, arriving on the first steamship to California, Feb 28, 1849, and later became California Secretary of State. This cover originated on the same departure as the famous 10c 1847 Issue strip-of-four cover from California to New York from the William H. Gross Collection.References: San Francisco Postal History: 1849 to 1869 Exhibit by Rick Mingee(Image 1) (Image 2)

6049 imageSan Francisco, California, 1853 Stampless Cover to New York, "12" Due Over Clamshell "Ship-6" Corrected Rate Markings, per Leverett
Uncommon Combination of Post Office Markings

San Francisco, California, two circular datestamp dates of Feb 16 and Mar 1 (1853) along with matching 12 due handstamp applied over "clamshell ship-6" due marking. Manuscript ship endorsement "pr Leverett" top left. Daily Alta newspaper shipping records show this vessel arriving Feb 17, 1853. It is possible the circular datestamp date slug was still left from the prior day standard shipping departure on Feb 16. This cover just missed the outbound mail departure and received the next possible steamer departure of Mar 1. The improper ship-6 rate was overstamped with 12 due, 10 cent transcontinental plus 2 cent ship fee (6 cent ship marking is for local SF delivery only). Uncommon combination of post office markings.(Image 1) (Image 2)
