6032 143L1 imageWells, Fargo & Co. Pony Express, 143L1, $2 Red, Uncancelled on U16 10c Green Nesbitt Front on Eastbound Trip to Washington, DC
An Attractive Eastbound Pony Express Front

$2 Red Pony Express stamp, uncancelled, affixed at upper left on 10c Green Nesbitt entire (U16), front only, with red "PAID / Wells, Fargo & Co. / Through Our California and Atlantic Express" printed frank and green "St. Joseph Mo. Jul 8" circular datestamp. This front traveled on Eastbound Pony Express Trip ET-112, departing San Francisco on June 26, 1861 and arriving in St. Joseph, Missouri on July 8, 1861, a transit time of 12 days. The $2 rate paid for Pony Express carriage from California to St. Joseph, where the letter entered the U.S. mail for delivery to Washington, D.C., with the 10c Nesbitt prepaying postage for the remaining distance. Heavy vertical file fold well clear of the stamp, stamp with a light crease. Fine. A front only, offering an economical alternative to a full Pony Express cover.

6033 WFE-097 imageWells, Fargo & Co. Eastern Transcontinental Pony Express Frank, Type I (WFE-097), "Free" Company Use to Official N. H. Stockwell
Only Three Other Known Examples, This being the Only Known "Free" Usage

An attractive usage of the Wells, Fargo & Co. 1/2 OUNCE PAID FROM St. JOSEPH TO PLACERVILLE PER PONY EXPRESS, Type I, printed frank. The Type I printed frank was used to prepay the $2.00 per half ounce express fee for only two months, approximately April to June 1861. The design differs from the more common Type II design (WFE-098) by having a comma at the end of the word "Placerville." Thomas notes that besides being printed on U40 envelopes, these printed franks were printed on white non-government envelopes, like this example. The addressee, N.H. Stockwell, was on the Board of Directors for Wells Fargo from 1858-1867. The manuscript "1/4 oz free" indicates that this was carried free as company use to an official, making this the only known free usage of the Type I design. There are only three other used examples of this design.
