1894 Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition - Franz Josef Land. 1894 Cover with printed crest on reverse of the S.Y "Windward", addressed in the handwriting of Frederick Jackson to "Henry Arthur Cooke Esq., H.B.M Vice-Consul,
Archangel, Russia", handstamped violet "FRANZ JOSEF LAND" The 1894-97 Expedition to explore Franz Josef Land and attempt to reach the North Pole was led by Frederick Jackson and sponsored by Alfred Harmsworth; it succeeded in determining the
geographical limits of Franz Josef Land and made the first thorough scientific examination of the island group. The "Windward" sailed back to England in July 1895, returned to Franz Josef Land in 1896, finally returning to England with the
expedition in Sept. 1897. Accompanying research includes records of eight covers from the expedition all with the Franz Josef Land cachet (one stampless, five with the expedition ‘stamp’, two posted registered in London with G.B stamps). A rare
cover and letters. Photo included on Front Cover. and bearing the photographically produced expedition ‘stamp’ entitled "S.Y Windward / Franz Josef Land" and depicting the ship. Also two letters from Jackson to Cooke (one almost certainly sent
in this envelope), the first on S.Y "Windward" notepaper headed "Lat. 78º13N, Long. 48º10E, Aug 23rd 94" thanks Cooke for his help at Archangel, the ship has steamed through the ice to Kharbowsova where they found Rawing waiting with their dogs and
took on reindeer meat; ice caused the "Windward" to drag her anchor and to shift her ground, running aground on an unmarked mudbank, only refloating after 50 tons of coal, most of the water and two anchors were got ashore, the ship should reach Bell
Island and Franz Josef Land the following day. The second letter headed "Elmwood, Cape Flora, Franz Josef Land, 8th April 1895" provides news of the expedition since reaching Franz Josef Land on 7th Sept. - the last 50-60 miles through ice, the ship
frozen in after reaching Franz Josef Land, Schlosshauer a complete fraud and worse than useless being the cause of the crews behaviour at Archangel where he allowed them to buy further vodka despite being drunk. He is to return, also Dunsford, an
impossible man. Enough bears and walruses have been shot to keep all in fresh meat. He has made one trip north accompanied by A. and Blomvist with 2 ponies and 1700lb of stores establishing a depot at the entrance to Markham Sound 38 miles away,
and is off again shortly. He requests 4 more Russian ponies and a reply in the 1896 ship. (Image1)

of delivering them unless "Windward" had come to grief and the member of the Ex. made for N.Z (Novaya Zemlya)". Feilden was an army officer and naturalist who took part in the 1875-76 Nares Antarctic Expedition; in 1895 he accompanied an expedition
to Novaya Zemlya and Spitsbergen.
