Lt Tommy Rose A.F.C", carried by Tommy Rose on his record breaking solo flight of 6 days 7 hours 5 minutes to Croydon, with circular cachet "CAPETOWN MUNICIPAL AIR-PORT / 3 MAR 1936 / WINGFIELD", posted upon arrival in London franked 1½d, reverse signed by Rose. Also contemporary news cutting and Photo of the plane. Fine and scarce, 18 covers flown, ten of these signed by Rose. Photo on Page 236. (Image1)

1927 Schlesinger Air Race. 1936 Covers carried on the Portsmouth to Johannesburg air race, flown by A.E Clouston who crashed in Southern Rhodesia, continuing in another plane from Bulawayo to Johannesburg with G.B ½d cancelled in Portsmouth (45 covers carried); flown by Tommy Rose and J. Bagshaw who retired from the race at Cairo, with G.B stamps cancelled in London and Egypt stamps in Cairo (100 covers carried of which 25 were posted in Cairo); flown by Captain S. Halse who crashed in Southern Rhodesia, with G.B ½d cancelled at Portsmouth and two Southern Rhodesia 1d stamps cancelled at Salisbury (Oct 7 & 12), 24 covers flown; or flown by Victor Smith, who retired from the race at Khartoum but continued to South Africa in easy stages, with G.B ½d cancelled at Portsmouth and South Africa 6d at George (18 Jan 37), 35 covers flown. A fine group, all four signed by the pilots. (4).

1928 1936-37 Record flights between England and South Africa comprising 1936 (May 3) cover posted at Harrogate, then flown by H.L Brook in his 36HP Praga Baby with cachet "England - Cape Town Ultra light planes, in record time 16 days 20hrs" and South Africa ½d cancelled at Cape Town; and 1937 (Nov 13) cover posted in London then flown by F/O A.E Clouston and Mrs Kirby Green in a DH Comet to Cape Town in 45hrs 2mins with Cape Town arrival c.d.s and Wingfield Air-Port cachet (both Nov 16), 38 covers carried. (2).

1929 image1938 (Oct 6) Stampless cover addressed "Dundee Press Greetings to Press of South Africa" flown by Imperial Airways Short-Mayo "Mercury" from Dundee to South Africa, which included the worlds longest non-stop seaplane flight of 9672km achieved in 42 hrs 5 mins to the mouth of the Orange River where the plane refuelled. Hand carried, signed by the Captain D.C.T Bennett and First Officer I. Harvey, endorsed by Bennett "Mercury, Scotland to S. Africa, 6th - 8th Oct. 1938". Very rare, one of two covers hand carried on this historic flight, which also carried normal Christmas mail. Ex Jeidel. Photo on Page 236. (Image1)

1930 image1939 (Feb 5) Stampless cover to L.A Wyndham in Cape Town endorsed "By favour of Alex Henshaw Esq" and signed by Henshaw, both sides with circular "LONDON EAST AIRPORT / GRAVESEND" (the cachet on the front dated 5-2-39, on the reverse signed and dated on 7.2.39) and boxed "CITY OF CAPE TOWN / MUNICIPAL AIRPORT" (two strikes dated 6 FEB and 8 FEB on the front, 8 FEB cachet on reverse). Henshaw flew from Gravesend to Cape Town in 39 hours 23 minutes then made the return journey in 39 hours 3 minutes, a record which still stands. A very rare cover flown in both directions, 32 covers carried on the outward flight and 12 on the return flight with fewer of these carried on both flights. Photo on Page 236. (Image1)

1931 1947 (Jan 14) Air letter to South Africa with South Africa 3d tied by Egypt Postage Prepaid datestamp, fire damaged, with accompanying 1942 (Feb 7) letter from the S.A Army Postal Directorate Middle East Forces, "the accompanying letter card was salvaged from a quantity of mail which was damaged by fire in the Western Desert on 19.1.42". A mail truck was stolen from A.P.O 13 attached to 1. Div. H.Q at Mersa Matruh and subsequently found burnt out. Scarce and unusual.
