483 image1844 (June 14) Printed envelope in gold, headed "FREE TRADE" with corn printed around the edges, second type envelope in the larger size of 130x82mm produced by John Gadsby, Secretary of the Anti-Corn Law League in Manchester, posted from Manchester bearing a 1d red (four margins) tied by "498" numeral, addressed in Gadsby s hand to Mr J. Bayley, Gt. Yarmouth, a Yarmouth, Norfolk arrival datestamp on the front. Backstamped at Manchester and London, corn printed in gold around the flap. A fine example of this very scarce and attractive envelope, one of four examples recorded used. Photo on Page 68. (Image1)

Valentine of Dundee, state 2, sent by Thomas Greig from Cupar to Dr Dick at Broughty Ferry franked by a 1d red (cut into) cancelled "92", Cupar and Dundee backstamps. Filing note at top in the hand of Dr Dick (a close ally of Elihu Burritt in the campaign for Ocean Penny Postage), otherwise very fine and a scarce envelope used, this cover ex Bodily, illustrated on page 203 of "British Pictorial Envelopes". 496 J. Valentine of Dundee envelope with "Intemperance" heading, state 2 envelope with "Parry & Co. London" at left of imprint, used in 1851 from Andover to Christchurch bearing a 1d red, sadly with a large hole in the address panel resulting in the loss of almost all the address, though barely touching the printed design; also an unused envelope, state 3 with "R. Theobald, London" and "E. Fry, Broad St. Buildings" added to the imprint, all the agents names now enclosed within an additional curved border. Very scarce, the state 2 envelope on cream paper the only recorded used example, two unused and one used example of state 3 envelope on white paper recorded. (2).
