453 1853 Printed entire letter from the Military Dept East India House concerning a soldiers discharge (the attached form removed with small loss to reverse) posted back to East India House at the 1d rate, headed "From Geo. Vickers Sergt Royal Marine, H.M.S Duke of Wellington, Lisbon 19th Dec" and countersigned, a 1d red (three margins) cancelled in London, disinfected with two chisel slits. A scarce disinfected 1d rate cover, good appearance.

The "Euryalus" was at Shanghai on 15 Nov. 1862 moving to Hong Kong on 1st December, from where this cover must have been sent by ships bag.

461 image1868 Cover endorsed "Topaze, Panama 21/4/68" and "Officers Letter" with crest of the "Topaze" on the flap, franked 1d (2) + 6d pair paying the double concession rate of 1/2 (1/- + 2d transit fee across Panama), all cancelled upon arrival in London, May 12 arrival backstamps. The cover opened out and a little trimmed on three sides (the reverse reduced by a further 1cm at base), the flap separated and rejoined with hinges, nevertheless very rare, the only double 7d concession rate cover we have seen. H.M.S "Invincible" and countersigned, the ship then at Barcelona, a 1d red cancelled in London, sent by private ship with red "SHIP-LETTER / LONDON" backstamp (Jan 21), a 1d fee payable to the Master of the steamer "Mina" that carried the cover to Liverpool, a "1d" postage due handstamp therefore applied, fine and unusual. 463 1888 (Oct 22) Cover headed "From J.E Young S.G.I H.M.S Swinger Australia" and countersigned, franked by a Queensland 1d cancelled upon arrival by London c.d.s (Dec 17), sent via Brindisi with a 1d transit charge due to Italy, a "1d" charge mark therefore applied in the London Foreign Branch. Minor edge stains and the stamp cut out and replaced (as occurred on virtually every cover from this correspondence) but a scarce use of a local adhesive (and not a G.B stamp) to pay the 1d concession rate.

467 1840 (Oct 27) 2d Lettersheet stereo a95 used from Wolsingham to London, reverse with two Wolsingham undated circles in black, Britannia cancelled by the distinctive Maltese Cross of Rushyford in red, Rushyford and London backstamps. Severe faults with splitting at folds, other creasing and edge faults, nevertheless the only example of this Maltese Cross recorded in red ink, or on a 2d Mulready.

468 image1841 (Mar 12) 1d Lettersheet stereo A5 containing printed Assessed and Land Taxes notice from the County Cess Office, Perth, posted from Perth to Errol cancelled by a superb strike of the Perth distinctive Maltese Cross in black. Redirected from Errol to Leith charged 1d, with straight line "ERROL" on the front, "Leith" then altered to "Edinburgh", backstamped at Perth, "INCH / TURE", Leith and Edinburgh. Vertical fold and minor flap faults, an attractive and unusual redirected Mulready, this distinctive Maltese Cross unlisted by S.G. on a Mulready (S.G. £700 on a 1d red cover, which is comparatively common). 469 imageAnti-Slavery. 1841 (Aug 20) 2d Lettersheet stereo a90 containing a printed advert for the "Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade, and for the Civilisation of Africa" (S.G. MA480h), posted within London to the School Depot, Grays Inn Road, cancelled by a black Maltese Cross. A little soiling mainly to reverse and minor edge faults, lower flap with ink stain and a little reduced (with loss of advert heading, the printed text all complete), folded to display part of the advert. Very few adverts are recorded on 2d Mulreadys, this example believed to be the earliest of two recorded examples of this version of the advert on a 2d lettersheet. Photo on Page 66. (Image1)

470 1841 (Sep 19) 1d Lettersheet stereo A76 containing a printed advert for the Clerical, Medical, and General Life Assurance Society with "Mr S.B Chapman, Agent, Corn Hill, Ipswich" at lower right, sent by Mr Chapman from Ipswich to London with the brief handwritten message "200 leeches per return of mail, S.B Chapman", cancelled by a black Maltese Cross with Ipswich and London backstamp. 471 image1843 (June 20) 2d Envelope from London to Missenden cancelled by superb number "1" in Maltese Cross in black, straight line "Bratch St" and fancy "Too Late" in red with an Amersham arrival datestamp all on the front, red London backstamp, a red wax seal impressed "Oriental Translation Committee". Very few number in cross cancels are recorded on 2d Mulreadys and this is probably a unique combination with the Too Late handstamp, superb and very rare. S.G. £7,500. Photo on Page 66. (Image1)
