1902 imageCol. Rudolf Slatin. 1895 (Apr 1) Cover franked 1pi, posted from Cairo to Giegler Pascha in Germany, with an enclosed two page signed letter from Slatin in German, arrival backstamp of Schweinfurt. Slatin was Governor of Darfur Province when captured by the Mahdi in 1883. He escaped from Omdurman on 20th February 1895, arrived in Cairo on March 19th and was made a Colonel in the Egyptian army on March 21st. Giegler was formerly Director of Posts and Acting Governor General in the Sudan. A scarce Slatin letter, ex Firebrace. (Cover + letter). Photo on Page 246. (Image1)

1903 Col. Rudolf Slatin. Undated letter, "My dear Douglas-Murray. I dont have a complete Dervish dress I have only guippa, sword & spear, yours sincerely R. Slatin". Slatin was Governor of Darfur Province when captured by the Mahdi in 1883; he escaped from Omdurman in 1895. A scarce autograph.

1904 imageFather Joseph Ohrwalder. 1895 (May 25) Egypt 1pi letter card to Austria, a "SAWAKIN" c.d.s below the stamp, the letter written and signed by Ohrwalder, the letter in German mentioning Paolo Rossignoli and Rudolf Slatin, who had both recently escaped from Omdurman. Ohrwalder, an Austrian Priest was captured by the Mahdi in 1882; he escaped from Omdurman with two sisters and a slave girl in 1891, going to Suakin to continue his mission work. Also two prints of Ohrwalder. Some light staining but a scarce signed letter posted at Suakin. Ex Firebrace. Photo on Page 246. (Image1)
