1672 image1911 KEVII 1d Red, prepared for use but not issued, with violet "SPECIMEN" handstamp type SH2 applied in St. Helena, fine mint. This stamp was printed in this large format in error, due to a misunderstanding in the order sent to De La Rue. Upon receipt in St. Helena the stamps were destroyed, a few copies however receiving this local Specimen handstamp, probably used in presentation sets. Very scarce. Photo on Page 260. (Image1)

1673 image1818 (Jan 24) Entire letter from Sarah Wheeler, to her sister in England, reporting the death of her husband Bombardier Wheeler, the letter allowed at the soldiers 1d concession rate (as an act of compassion by the Commanding Officer, against regulations), headed "From Bomb. Jn Wheeler, R. Artillery" and countersigned by Major Power, prepaid 1d to "George Dean, Moulder at Mr Salsburys Iron Works near Dudley, Worcestershire". Endorsed "Paid 1" with oval "ST HELENA / PACKET LETTER" (Jan 26) and "PAID / INDIA / PACKET LETTER" (Mar. 25, Rob. In P1, recorded 1816-19), London Paid datestamp. Just twelve examples of the St. Helena Packet Letter datestamp are recorded, two of which are on 1d rate soldiers letters, one from John Wheeler and this letter from his widow. These two letters are the only recorded soldiers rate letters from St. Helena during Napoleon's exile on the island. A rare and important letter. Photo on Inside Back Cover. (Image1)

1674 imageU.S.S "Juniata". 1868 (Aug 27) Cover from Benjamin Lamberton, a cadet on the "Juniata", to his daughter in the USA franked 4d pair + 1/- (S.G. 13, 17) each cancelled by cork type "H" (Proud K3), tied by red London Paid c.d.s (Sep 23), with oval St. Helena datestamp in blue-green. Red "9" (due to G.B), carried by U.S Packet "City of New York II" from Queenstown, the sea postage paid with red "16 / CENTS" (postage due to the U.S), the U.S inland postage unpaid with "5 / N. YORK A.M PKT" c.d.s, the reverse endorsed "U.S Steamer "Juniata, St. Helena Aug 27th '66". The "Juniata" served with the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1865-67 making one cruise to the coast of Africa in June-Sept. 1866. A fine and rare cover. Photo on Page 234. (Image1)
