1405 image1883 (Jan 12) Cover from Lunugala, Ceylon to "Henry Coltam, Govt. Experimental Gardens, Lows Hill, Perak" with two 4c stamps each cancelled by numeral "16", a black "LUNUGALA / PAID" c.d.s obliterated by the "16" numeral, replaced with red "LUNUGALA / UNPAID" c.d.s and red double oval "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / LUNUGALA" containing manuscript "11 Rate, 16c", also endorsed "Def 20". "COLOMBO / UNPAID" (Jan. 15, in red) and "PENANG / UNPAID" (Jan. 24) datestamps applied, then missent to Nebong Tebal with two blue "NEBONG TEBAL / UNPAID" datestamps on reverse, returned to Penang where the Nebong Tebal datestamps were each obliterated with the octagonal "B/172", another "PENANG / UNPAID" datestamp applied (Jan. 27) with triangular framed "T" and "8" charge mark, endorsed "Try Perak". Again forwarded from Penang, backstamped "LARUT-I" c.d.s (Jan. 28), a "KUALA-KANGSAR" arrival c.d.s (Jan. 29) on the front with "PAID" also applied at Kuala Kangsar. Front with opening tears at upper edge and through one stamp, otherwise fine and a remarkable cover. Proud only records one example of the Penang Unpaid c.d.s (PD3) with the "T" handstamp (PD6) 37 years earlier than the single recorded use and the "8" (PD16) 23 years earlier than recorded, the Nebong Tebal Unpaid c.d.s previously unrecorded, and a rare use of the Kuala Kangsar "PAID" handstamp (PD1) which was usually used as a cancellation on stamps.
