Sullivan, Skilled Shipwt, H.M.S "Euryalus", Suez" and countersigned with a handstamped signature, a G.B 1d lilac paying the 1d sailor rate, cancelled upon arrival in the London Foreign Branch, Birmingham backstamp (Mar 20). Creases and part flap removed but an uncommon sailors letter from Egypt, sent shortly before the British occupation of the country.

477 Sudan. 1896 (Aug 5) Stampless cover to Scotland endorsed "Field Service, no stamps obtainable, Karin, Commanding 10th Sudanese" and signed "H.M Sidney", recipients filing endorsement "Koskeh, 5Aug", with "WADI-HALFA / CAMP" c.d.s (Aug 10) and boxed "T", single rate "2½d" charge mark applied in London. Arrival backstamps of Stratton and Maybole (Aug 27), redirected to London. Flap missing and minor edge faults, otherwise fine.

489 image1885 (June 2) Stampless cover to "Captain Trotter, Acting Special Comdt for Stellaland", signed and dated "J. W Harrel 2/6/85", with enclosed letter from Motito, which includes "as a great many natives proceeding from the south to the north go through Stellaland not knowing of the existence of a wagon toll or tax, I think it would be advisable that you should tell Field Cornet van Nooyen that he ought to exercise a little discrimination in cases where ignorance of the law is pleaded and allow those who wish to leave Stellaland via Takoon without enforcing payment". A rare official cover presumably carried by mounted police, Captain Trotter being based in Mafeking at this date, the reverse endorsed as received on June 4th. Photo on Page 76. (Image1)

495 image1892 (June 26) Stampless cover to "Mr Joyce, Transport Agent, c/o Mafeking Post Office, Mafeking", headed "O.H.M.S" and signed "Chas. A. L Ricketts, Lt & Gen, B.B.P", marked "unknown" with datestamps of Mafeking (June 30) and Returned Letter Office Mafeking (July 4, only recorded example). Upon opening at the Returned Letter Office it was found to contain a private letter not of an official nature, and 8d (twice the 4d deficit) was therefore collected, presumably from Charles Ricketts, 2d and 6d British Bechuanaland stamps being applied and cancelled by violet oval "POSTMASTER GENERAL'S OFFICE / 13 JY 92 / BRITISH BECHUANALAND". 499 1899 (Sep 17) Large (255x205mm) printed "The Governor of the Cape of Good Hope" O.H.M.S cover to England, signed "A.L Godley, Maj + Adjt, Protectorate Regt", with Mafeking squared circle and red "OFFICIAL-PAID". An unusual cover accepted as officially paid although the franking privilege only extended to mail addressed within the Cape, sent less than four weeks before the siege of Mafeking by Major Alexander Godley, who was Adjutant to Col. Baden-Powell during the siege, vertical fold, otherwise fine.
