411 USA. c.1840-60 Printed valentine envelopes (5) all printed in gold with decorative designs, four including roses (two also with doves on reverse), the other with cherubs and lovebirds within the design, four postally used, to "Miss Josephine Newell, Fall River, Mass." with "PAID" handstamp, to "Miss Sarah E. Ball, Saccarappa, Me" with manuscript "2", to "Miss Lucy K. Slade, Present" with red "CHELSEA / Ms" datestamp and "PAID", or to "Miss Kate Frathingham, Pittston, Pa" with manuscript "Dunnard Pa, Feb 14th" and "5", the other hand delivered to Miss Matilda E. Thomson in Albany. Also a card by Ch. Magnus of New York depicting a man and lady in gardens with verses below. A fine group. (6).

412 c.1840-1950 Valentines including 1896 card "I hope you wont get the needle because of my pointed remarks but I'm darned if I dont love you" bearing a real needle and thread posted from Potters Bar; 1904 cover posted from Cowes with enclosed imitation telegraph form "Cupids Official Telegraphs"; cards with silk edging postally used within boxes (2, faults); an early and attractive handdrawn and partly printed card "To My Valentine" (possibly a design for a card); Marcus Ward card with a print of a soldier; a few postcards, 1907 heart shaped card posted from Canada to England franked 2c, etc. (31).

Posted within the London 2d Post addressed to "Miss F. Gwynne, at Mr Towers, St. Clements Lane, Near Yeates's Court" with "Blackheath / 2py P. Paid" and red FE 14 datestamps, fine and attractive.

417 c.1821 Valentine lettersheet (undated but watermarked "1821") by Dobbs, a fine embossed border incorporating cupids with wording in French at each corner, the centre with peaches and grapes cut into a "cobweb" pattern (central cord missing, minor splits) which lifts to reveal a heart containing the words "in love be true, as true as mine", handpainted, a long handwritten verse within. Posted to "Miss Mary Hobday, Barham, Canterbury" with light "RAMSGATE / 75" mileage mark, charged "5d" with a further "7d" charge (and "6½" crossed out), presumably an extra 2d local delivery fee charged to Barham. Address panel with the folds strengthened with archival tape, otherwise fine, an attractive and scarce postally used cobweb valentine.
