StampAuctionNetwork Sale - 2603

Thematics. France & Colonies with emphasis on Rare Proofs - October 20, 2026

We extend our sincere thanks to all who participated in our second sale featuring material from the inventory of Pierre Wertheimer, together with selections from the holdings of a North Carolina collector/investor. Bidding remained strong for Monaco issues, Compound Deluxe Sheets and Blocs Spéciaux with many lots realizing competitive prices. Some desirable lots remain available and may now be purchased at their opening bids.

Pierre Wertheimer has been an active philatelic collector and dealer for more than four decades and is widely recognized as one of the foremost specialists in modern proofs. His publication, An Introduction to Modern Proofs of the French Area, issued in 1984, remains an important reference for collectors and students of French-area philately. A PDF version of this publication is available here.

From 1990 through 2000, Pierre conducted auctions on our platform through his company, France International, prior to its sale in 2001. He has remained actively engaged in philately as a collector, dealer, and researcher. In addition to serving as co-administrator of the Facebook group Philatélie - Les spécialistes des épreuves, he has authored numerous articles on proofs that have appeared in leading philatelic publications, as well as in French Colonies and thematic collecting forums.

This third offering presents a carefully selected group of important proof material, rare thematic exhibit items, and other specialized philatelic holdings. Many of the lots are seldom encountered in the marketplace, and several are unique. These offerings provide collectors and exhibitors with an exceptional opportunity to acquire material that is rarely available.

We are pleased to present this exceptional material and trust that collectors, exhibitors, and dealers alike will find much of interest in this third offering. This is a Live Auction using StampAuctionNetwork's Auto Hammer. You will notice no difference from regular Live bidding, except there is no auctioneer selling and waiting on each lot. Each lot will be open for 15 seconds and then be sold. Each new bid will reset the timer for another 15 seconds.

This second sale has 126 lots. Live Bidding will start at 11:00 am EST.

You can also enter your bids before the auction as absentee bids, or use "Unattended Live Bidding", to have StampAuctionNetwork execute them for you when the lot comes up for sale. This allows you to enter your maximum bid to be executed for you live (as in mail auctions or Vente sur Offres in France) without revealing your top bid. Both estimates and minimum bid (reserve) are available.

We have a PDF of a brochure on Modern Proofs of the French Area that he published back in 1984. For "An Introduction to Modern Proofs of the French Area" refer to this helpful PDF file found (here) and a PDF of an article "The UPU Specimens of the French Colonies" that can be found (here)
