1936-39 Arab Revolt

Palestine Mandate
Sale No: 7
Lot No: 254
Symbol:

Palestine Mandate. Palestine/Switzerland: 20th Zionist Congress delegate's pin, (1937); nickel(?); manufactured by Moshe Moro of Jerusalem; size: 19.5mm x 22.5mm; weight: 5g. Square shield shaped pin depicting the official emblem of the congress (a Hebrew letter "Kaf" whose numerical value is "20"), with Star of David in right corner and Hebrew legend above "The Zionist Congress". On reverse, a safety pin and Moro's mark. The 20th Zionist Congress took place in Zurich throughout most of August 1937, under the leadership of Menachem Ussishkin (the head of the Jewish National Fund): against the backdrop of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt in Palestine, it debated the position of the Zionist movement with regard to the 1936 Peel Commission's study to establish the practicality of dividing Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states - Ussishkin's faction was opposed, though the faction represented by Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion supported such a partition. In the end, the Congress rejected specific borders recommended by the Commission but permitted its executive to negotiate over them.

1939-48 Jewish Insurgency in Palestine

Hungary
Sale No: 7
Lot No: 255
Symbol:

Hungary. Hungary: bronze token of 1st postwar (5th) convention of the religious-Zionist "Bachad" youth movement, in Budapest, 1947; size: 1.75 x 2.1mm; weight: 2.4g. Obverse bears legend in Hebrew: "[Hebrew month of] Tamuz [June-July, in the year] 5707 Fifth Convention Budapest"; on reverse the emblem of the "Bachad" youth movement. The token is designed as a tallion.

"Bachad" - "Brit Chalutzim Datiim", the "Covenant of Religious [Zionist] Pioneers" was founded in German in 1928 to train and prepare religious-Zionist youths to emigrate to Palestine and establish communities there. The movement operated also in Austria, Britain Czechoslovakia, Holland, Hungary, and Romania, and in Poland (under the auspicies of the "Bnei Akiva" and "HaShomer HaDati" youth movements). The movement was established on the basis of another movement called "Tzeirey Mizrachi" ("Mizrachi Youth" - Mizrachi being an existing religious political party) to serve as an umbrella organization for all the religious-Zionist youth movements in Germany, and initially known as "HaChalutz HaMizrachi" before being renamed "Bachad".

The reknowned scientist and thinker, Yeshayahu Leibowitz, prepared the educational program of the movement. In 1937 "Bachad" together with other religious youth movements founded the "Kibbutz HaDati" settlement movement within whose framework it established the Kibbutz 'Tirat Tzvi'. The movement's last pre-war convention was its 4th, in 1934 in Berlin, and this tallion commemorates their 5th convention, in Budapest prior to (and on the eve of) Israel's establishment, with strict immigration quotas and a British sea-blockade on Palestine in place.

Israel. 1948 JERUSALEM siege / Jewish Quarter of Old City: full strike of Second "Wall" Postmark (????? ?????) tied to top-guttered Interim 10m JERUSALEM Locals II frank on unaddressed cover (franked per period letter rate) on mint "Doar" stationary envelope. This 2nd type was ordered as the original one was not portable. It was received on 10 May (same date that the Locals II frank entered use) by the last convoy to reach the besieged Old City, and any mail marked by it was carried by the last outgoing convoy on the 13th (day before Independence day). Unlike the 3rd type (created after establishment of Israel) known only for souvenir and philatelic strikes, this 2nd version was legitimately used by the defending forces in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Extremely rare and very fine - at a minimum as a genuine momento from the "siege within the siege".

The Israeli Airforce operated the airfield from the 21st until 19 February 1974 as the newly named "Nachshon" airfield: it housed a military hospital, bus terminal and religious Yeshiva; 3 days later, on the last day of the war (24 October), the IAF defeated an Egyptian airforce attack on the base. Located on the west bank of the Great Salt Lake, the base was a critical logistical hub for the Israelis until it was evacuated and demolished, following the ceasefire agreement with Egypt.

Sale No: 7
Lot No: 248

Cat No: Collection

Chile. Chile: 20th anniversary commemorative medal of the Zionist Federation ("Federación Sionista de Chile"), 1939; struck in aluminum/alloy; maker-marked "JP"; size (medal only): 28mm; weight: 9.8g. Obverse bears a Star of David at center, with Spanish legend above and below "XX Aniversario" and "Fed. Sionista de Chile". Reverse bears a raised hand drawn out of a Hebrew letter "Kaf" (which means "20" when used as a digit; the 20th Zionist Congress of 1937 used the letter "Kaf" as well in its emblem) with Hebrew legend below "If I Forget Thee O Jerusalem" and the dates "1919 1939" above; minter/marker's mark is at base, near edge. The obverse of the medal may be a reused planchet as traces of the design can still be seen, though upside down. This example has a vertical rosette device at the base of the wreath; another variety with a different maker's mark has a horizontal rosette device instead - perhaps two different engravers who knew how to design Hebrew letters. Zionist activity in Chile increased after the First World War party because of Jewish immigration caused by the Russian revolution and also because of the Balfour Declaration (of 1917): by 1919 a "Congress of Chilean Jewry" of representatives from 13 cities convened in order to centralize the Jewish community, and here the "Federacion Sionista de Chile" was established and became the main organization of Chilean Jewry. In VF-EF; seldomly encountered with a ribbon.

Israel. Soviet subtle 'postkrieg' against Israel: 28-2-1988 registered airmail cover from RISHON LE ZION to MOSCOW (USSR) for "personal delivery", franked 2.40NIS per FA-38 period rate & franked with 1.40nis 'Medical Engineering' + 1nis 'Archeology in Jerusalem' - the latter being boycotted by the Soviet authorities for promoting Israeli sovereignty in united Jerusalem: the cover was backstamped 15-5-88 (long 2 month transit time for airmail - deliberately handled slowly) MOSCOW transit, with the address albeit being translated to Russian - but then being cross out and cover tied by French language "Return | Refused" instructional marking handstamp. With such a long and precise address it's clear that the senders knew the letter's delivery may encounter difficulty and that the official reason given for mail's return was an excuse.

Undocumented case in Postkrieg research: in the 1970's and 80's the USSR took many active postkrieg measures against Jewish and Zionist targets - many of which remain undocumented in Postkrieg literature, and as a 10 Feb. 1986 Jewish Telegraphic Agency report notes, about the Soviet Union's refusal to accept mail franked with the 1986 Herzl stand-by definitives, the Soviet post office didn't resort to dramatic postal markings and simply marked the refused mail with standard "addressee unknown" handstamps. Here too, although not a documented example with the Archeology stamps but confirmed by numerous similar covers studied, the USSR used subtle bureaucratic procedures to deny postal service (though it's accentuated by the senders' use of postal services to track shipment and confirm delivery to known addresses) - all undocumented in the Postkrieg catalogue.

The USSR objected to the "Defense Fund for Israel" display and refused to give the letter further postal service. Opened roughly at back but complete, vertical fold.
