Gral / Puerto Rico' cds in blue (Aug 29). The letter internally endorsed 'per Atrato', passed to British P.O. and prepaid with '2/2d.' in red manuscript with fine "♚ / PAID / AT SAN JUAN PORTO RICO" in black. London transit in red (Sept 17) with circular 'PP' in red at right. Reverse with double arc 'San-Juan-Porto-Rico' cds in black and Madrid arrival (Sept 21). A scarce and very fine entire. image 1856 (May 29): Entire letter from San Juan to Caceres, Spain, franked by Antilles 1855 ½ r. blackish green on blued (Scott 1a) with large margins all round tied by both network handstamp in black and by fine "♚ / PAID / AT SAN JUAN PORTO RICO" in blue with 'Isla De / Pto. Rico' cds in blue (May 29) alongside. Rated '2/1d.' prepaid in red manuscript. Reverse with double arc 'San-Juan-Porto-Rico' cds also struck in blue and Caceres arrival (June 22). A beautiful small entire and the sole recorded usage of both British markings struck in blue ink, also the sole recorded cover with this Crown Circle cancelling a stamp. Exceptional. Cert. Faint 'London / Paid' datestamp in red at right (Aug 28) and Genova arrival (Aug 30) on reverse. The 1 d. red plate 172 was issued to San Juan and is unrecorded by Stanley Gibbons used in Aguadilla. image 1873 (March 11): Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 156, 1867 3 d. rose pl. 8 and 1 s. green pl. 6 all used on 1873 printed envelope endorsed 'Per R.M.Steamer via Southampton' from Aguadilla to Genova, Italy tied by "F84" obliterators in black with fine "Aguadilla Porto Rico / Paid' cds in black (March 11). 'London / Paid' transit cds (March 31) and oval 'PD' in red, reverse with Genova arrival cds in black (April 4). Small trim at top and piece of envelope missing at upper right but a remarkable three colour franking, the 3 d. plate 8 being unpriced by SG used from Aguadilla and this is the second earliest date of use for the "F84" obliterator. Straight line REGISTERED alongside applied on despatch or in St. Thomas in transit (unrecorded for Puerto Rico, listed in Parmenter & Gordon but not seen in St. Thomas) and oval REGISTERED / LONDON transit in red at right (March 1). Reverse with 'St. Thomas' cds (Feb 13) and Grenoble arrival (March 2). The sole recorded registered cover from a British Post Office in Puerto Rico and an impressive and beautiful rarity. Cert. Struck with INSUFFICIENTLY / PREPAID in black with manuscript "1d." alongside with light pencil erasure and thus probably prepaid in cash to make the correct 1/4d. rate. Circular 'PD' in red applied in London (April 14) confirms this. Genova arrival (April 17) on reverse. Illustrated in Parmenter & Gordon on page 5/62. A beautiful cover for the connoisseur. Cert. Double arc 'Trinidad' arrival datestamp on obverse (Jan 3, 1876) in black. Manuscript '2' in blue for Trinidad credit, reverse with two 'St. Thomas' transit cds's (Dec 28).
