Incoming from Austrian Levant Offices 1868 (March 12): Partially prepaid cover from Tulcea to Syra, bearing Austrian Italy 1864 Arms 15 s. bistre, tied by TULTSCHA despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 837) in black, upon arrival charged with '20' lepta in blue crayon. Cleaned plates printing 1868/69 20 l. blue applied and tied by Syros arrival cds (March 10, 1868). Mail from France to Greece 1868: Entire letter sent unpaid from Marseille to Athens, endorsed 'voie de Syra' at top, carried on the Paquebot 'Niemen' and struck with circular LIGNE X / PAQ. FR. No. 1 in black (May 18) and with handstruck '90 LEP' in black (van der Linden fig. 3338), the amount due being paid by 1868 10 l. deep orange on very blued paper and a delightful horizontal strip of four 20 l. blue all tied by Athens cds's (May 12, julian). Underpaid Mail from France to Greece 1870: Cover from Marseillle to Hydra, Greece endorsed 'par vapeur Amêrique' franked by Laureated 1867 40 c. orange tied by 2240 gros chiffres on depatch (Jan 28). Underpaid by 20 centimes and struck with AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in red. Cover marked with '0.50' (francs) in manuscript - the calculation done at parity (1 centime = 1 lepta) - and the letter charged at 50 lepta to pay (90 lepta for unpaid cover, less 40 centimes = 50 centimes / lepta due). Franked by 1862/67 10 l. bright orange on greenish and 40 l. lilac on blued tied by 'Hydra' cds's (Jan 27, julian). A few small imperfections but an unusual and extremely scarce cover. Reverse with Aachen transit in blue, Triest oval and Kerkyra transit datestamps. '145' (lepta) in red crayon on front - rate of 145 lepta under Greek / Austrian Convention of 1867.
