image Warren Expedition. 1885 Stampless soldiers rate cover endorsed "From Trooper Kent 1st M.R, On Active Service, No Stamps Procurable", countersigned by the Commanding Officer of C. Troop on July 10th, with "BARKLY / G.W" c.d.s (July 19), backstamped at Cape Town and upon arrival in England, charged the single 1d rate. Opened out, closed tear at left, minor faults at upper edge and reverse slightly reduced. A scarce soldiers rate campaign cover. Photo on Page 128. (Image1)

P.O Notices. 1888 (July 28) and 1892 (Nov 17) Printed Post Office Notices giving the postal rates within and from the Protectorate, both printed at Vryburg. The first headed "..... arrangements will shortly be completed for the establishment of a Postal Service, by Native Runners, between British Bechuanaland and Matabeleland via Bamangwato, when the following rates of postage will come into force:-"; the second announcing reduced charges on mail to the Protectorate and Trans-Protectorate due to the abolition of delivery charges, and new rates for postcards, book packets and samples, parcels and registration. The 1888 notice fine, the 1892 notice with a few edge tears, both folded, very scarce. (2).

Post Office Reports. 1888-89 Annual Reports of the Postmaster-General of British Bechuanaland for the years ending August 31st 1888 or September 30th 1889 with details of the postal routes and rates and post offices, with exact records of the numbers of letters, official letters, newspapers, book packets and registered letters received and despatched at each office, sales of stamps and postage collected upon delivery. The first a little stained, otherwise fine, two rare and fascinating documents. (2).

1889-95 Postal and other documents, including 1889 timetables for the postal services from Mafeking to Soshong via Notwanie Junction or via Kanya, Molopolole and Notwanie Junction; 1890 printed circular regarding the abuse of the telegraph system by Government officers, and a subsequent 1892 report into continuing abuses of the telegraph system; 1893 report on Post Office accounts; 1893 copy letters regarding alteration of the postal route to Tati; 1893 PMG receipt for money paid to the Gaberones Deputy Postmaster for allowances; 1894 list of Post Masters salaries, etc. (12).

Money Orders. 1890 Original handwritten convention to establish a system of exchange of Money Orders between the Cape of Good Hope and British Bechuanaland, comprising eleven pages of text listing 33 articles, and a further 13 pages of schedules with handdrawn copies of various forms, including Cape and Bechuanaland Money Orders and Money Order Advice forms, requisition forms and labels to be affixed to the orders, Money Order Telegrams and P.O copy forms, receipts to the remitter or payee of telegraphic Money Orders. A superbly drawn and unique document.

image Gubulawayo/Rhodesia. 1891 Covers to Kimberley (2) or Johannesburg, the two long covers to Kimberley franked British Bechuanaland 1888 6d pair or British Bechuanaland 1888 2d + Protectorate overprint 4d on ½d, both cancelled "678" with "GUBULAWAYO" c.d.s alongside, the third cover with British Bechuanaland 6d tied by the Gubulawayo c.d.s, all with Mafeking and arrival backstamps. All three covers with vertical folds, the third cover to Transvaal with large opening tears, nevertheless very scarce covers from the Trans-Protectorate, located within Mashonaland with the postal service operated by Bechuanaland from August 1888 until the B.S.A.P Co. took over the mail service in May 1894. Royal Tours/ Imperial Press Conference. 1925-34 Covers and cards with 1925 commercial covers to Cape Town or Pretoria bearing Bechuanaland 2d tied by the oval "SOUTH AFRICA / ROYAL TOUR" cancel (June 27/28), one with the Prince of Wales feathers on the flap, possibly sent by the Prince; and a 1935 picture postcard to Natal, the commercial message headed "Imperial Press Conference on train just passed Palapye Road, 3pm 21/2/35" with Bechuanaland 1d tied by the smaller size "SOUTH AFRICA / IMPERIAL PRESS CONFERENCE" c.d.s. image Oldsmobile Kalahari Expedition. 1929 Cover to Cape Town bearing two Bechuanaland KGV 1d stamps, one cancelled "OLDSMOBILE / 23 NOV. 1929 / KALAHARI MAIL" with a second strike alongside, the other cancelled at Gaberones Station (Nov 28). The Expedition crossed the Kalahari in Oldsmobile vehicles, from Ghanzi to Gaberones and went on to Johannesburg. Very little mail was carried and the expedition c.d.s is very scarce; this is the only cover we have recorded with the datestamp on Bechuanaland stamps.
