Classic Commems Gold

Sale No: 33
Lot No: 184
Symbol:
Cat No: Lewis & Clark 1904

image 1904 Lewis & Clark $1 AU lightly cleaned. Charles Barber designed this coin with the famous explorers on either side rendering the determination of obv & rev debatable. (The date is normally on the obv and that is the side with Meriwether Lewis.) They were struck for the Lewis & Clark Exposition held in Portland OR in 1905 to celebrate the 100th anniv. of the event. Records indicate that 10,025 were sold to the public from an initial mintage of 25,000. The remaining 14,975 were returned to the mint and melted. Of those sold, many were lost or melted at a later time. They are rather scarce today and rarely offered. (Image)

Cat No: Lewis & Clark 1905

image 1905 Lewis & Clark $1 AU lightly cleaned w/ a couple obv & rev scratches indicative of possible mount or bezel removal. See comments for the previous lot. From an initial mintage of 35,000 records indicate that 10,041 were sold to the public, the remaining 24,959 were returned to the mint and melted. Many were later lost from carelessness or melted for the gold value. (Image)

Sale No: 33
Lot No: 186
Symbol:
Cat No: McKinley 1916

image 1916 McKinley $1 Gold XF detail. A myriad of small scratches are present on both obv & rev. Struck in 1916 and 1917 and sold to raise money for a Birthplace Memorial to the slain president to be located in his hometown of Niles, OH. (McKinley was shot Sept 6, 1901 while attending the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo NY by an unemployed wire mill worker and self-proclaimed anarchist named Leon Czolgosz, He died eight days after the shooting. After being arrested, Czolgosz pleaded guilty and claimed that, " . . . . . I do not believe that one man should have so much service while another man should have none." He was put to death for the crime on Oct 29th, 1901 by a recent innovation in criminal justice called the electric chair.) In 1916, 20,000 McKinley commemorative gold dollars were struck; in 1917, an additional 10,000 all bearing that date. Of the 10,023 later melted, Breen wrote that they were all dated 1916. However, modern researchers doubt this claim since there are far more of the 1916 issue in the marketplace (compared to 1917), especially in the circulated and low mint state grades. (Image)
