COCOS ISLANDS: 1909 (July 2) GB picture postcard to "JT Stavers/Eastern Extension Telegraph Compy/Cocos Islands" with 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE/JY2/1909' marine sorter cds on the face & forwarded from Cocos by first available ship, minor blemishes. [Superior to Colin Riddell's similar PPC that sold at our auction of 3.3.2019 for $1438]
COCOS ISLANDS: 1939 (June 3) Sydney-KUT-Sydney boomerang cover per "Guba" with 'C&W LTD/12JUN39/ COCOS' cds on the reverse, registered for the return flight per Imperial Airways with KUT 50c tied by 'KISUMU/23JU/39/KENYA' cds, Sydney arrival b/s of 6JY39, a few faults.
COCOS ISLANDS: 1949 local cover with 'BMA/MALAYA' 3c green tied by a superb strike of the 'C&W LTD/19NOV49/COCOS' cds. Stated to be the only recorded usage of the cds as a canceller.
COCOS ISLANDS: 1950 (Feb 12) cover from Adelaide to "The Postmaster/Cocos Island/Indian Ocean", oval 'COCOS IS/PER ("Islander")' h/s in violet & provisional usage of the earlier 'C&W LTD/5JUN50/COCOS' arrival cds both on the reverse. [The second cds was introduced by 28JAN50. Later & very occasional usage of the earlier cds has been noted]
COCOS ISLANDS: 1951 cover endorsed "Inaugural Flight/Australia to Cocos Islands" with Federation 5½d tied by Melbourne Federation slogan of 19MAY/1951, to "WP Sher/co Post Office/CAICOS ISLANDS" (fortunately endorsed "Try Cocos", largely superb strike of the second 'C&W LTD/30MAY1951/COCOS' arrival b/s: see AAMC #1273b, Cat $1250 (2008). [Strikes of the second Cable & Wireless cds differ in many details from the earlier type. Most obviously, the new cds has the letters 'LTD' all the same size; the earlier cds had smaller & raised 'TD'. The inner circle is 20mm across, compared with 18½mm on the earlier cds. Colin Riddell's similar cover ex Sydney sold at our auction of 3.3.2019 for $1198]

Rare. [Exhorbitant rates per 20 words printed on the flap - 18/- to Alexandria & £3/5/- ! to England - indicate why these early envelopes are so elusive]
EGYPT: 1863 (Nov 14) black/orange 'TELEGRAPH TO INDIA COMPANY, LIMITED/TELEGRAM' envelope with 'Despatched from Jubal Island' imprint at L/L largely obscured by GB 6d deep lilac SG 83 horizontal pair (very fine) just tied by very fine 'B02' cancels of 'SUEZ' (light cds at U/R), repaired flap-tear. Rare. Peter Holcombe Certificate (1991). [Jubal is an Egyptian island at the southern end of the Red Sea and the then terminus of the cable from Alexandria]
EGYPT: 1864 (Apr 28) blue/pale blue 'TELEGRAM/ALEXANDRIA CAIRO & SUEZ TELEGRAPH' envelope to India with GB 1/- green SG 101 tied by oily 'B02' cancel of 'SUEZ' (cds below), poor Bombay arrival b/s of MY12/64, minor defects & light soiling. [Until 1864, the cable terminated at Suez. The first attempt to extend the cable to India was a failure. An alternative route was successfully trialled in late-1864]
EGYPT: 1864 (Dec 5) blue/pale blue 'TELEGRAM/ALEXANDRIA CAIRO & SUEZ TELEGRAPH' envelope to India with GB 4d pale red SG 82 vertical strip of 3 (very fine but for a rounded corner at L/L) tied to the reverse by three strikes of the 'B02' cancel of 'SUEZ' (cds on the face), wax seal cut-out. [A very late usage before the cable was extended in 1865 to Bombay]
EGYPT: 1894 (Dec 14) illustrated Eastern Telegraph Company red/buff 'TELEGRAM' envelope locally used to "Poste Restante" with Egypt 3m orange tied by 'ALEXANDRIE/...' cds, 'RIEN A PAYER' h/s (= Nothing to Pay) at L/L, repaired flap.
