image Panama, 1873 (Mar. 15), Folded letter sheet from Valparaiso, Chile, to Bordeaux, France, via Panama, in robin's egg blue, mailed by British Packet with manuscript "Via Panama" endorsement at upper left; reverse bears "Valparaiso/A/MR 15/73/UNPAID" origin, red London AP 28 transit and Bordeaux 29 AVRIL receiver; front additionally bears a French "Angl./28 AVRIL/73/Amb. Calais" transit and a solid strike of a hexagonal "GB/1F90c" accountancy mark; the letter concerns not exceeding the normal 200 cases per month of French wine being shipped—good taste, Very Fine, a precursor to the Canal.
