Cancels & Postmarks

Fancy Cancels
Sale No: 5116
Lot No: 3259
Symbol:
Cat No: Collection

image Twentieth Century Fancy Cancels, Group of 17 covers with contemporaneous pictorial add-on "cancels" with designs relating to the name of the town, egi Alligator, Miss., Bay Horse, Mont., Birdsnest, Va., Blackfoot, Mont., Blue Ball, Ark., Buffalo, Mont., Buffalo, Okla., Bumble Bee, Ariz., etc. All but one are from 1935-37 and are addressed in the same hand or bear a rubberstamped address to a member of the Logan family of Overland Park, Kans. All are rubber stamps that have been applied in addition to the regular town postmark. A few are hand colored, while five have matching printed cachets. One, from 1930, is from a different producer, though from one of the same towns as the Logan designs: Butterfly, Ky. Interestingly, three of the Logan designs, those from Blue Ball, Ark., Moon, Va., and Pelican, La., actually managed to make it into the revised Loso & deWindt catalog as legitimate postal markings: LD N-90, N-539 & N-612, respectively. A fascinating and unique group. (Image)
