Reverse with British and Austrian Post Office datestamps of arrival (Nov 8). Some peripheral aging but an unusual and very early 'philatelic' cover. Cert. BPA (1982).rnNote: The use of British stamps in Argentina was ended in 1873. Great Britain and Egypt were original signatories of the UPU in 1875, Argentina joined on 1 April 1878. Wiggett "HMS Bombay", South America" to the Sailor's father in London, correctly counter-signed by Commanding Officer below, the adhesive tied on arrival in London by obliterator with London cds on reverse (Jan 2, 1865). Sadly the "HMS Bombay" was destroyed by fire in a freak gunnery accident off Isla de Flores on December 14, 1864 about 15 days after this letter was mailed. 93 lives were lost, amongst them Attendant William Wiggett. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 114. A rare and fine cover, believed to be the sole Naval concession cover recorded from Uruguay. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image)
