1849 Type 1 Open Wreath - No L Unc Details Cleaned. A beautiful example of the inaugural year for this issue, well struck w/ a couple of stars boldly re-punched (diagnostic for the No L) and a rev die crack rim to rim going through the "1". The only issue is that residual hairlines mar the overall appearance. The "No L" variety lacks the designer's initial L (for Longacre) on the truncation of the Liberty's bust. Sources state that only about 1,000 pieces were struck before production was halted. Mint Director Robert Patterson was worried that the relief was too high (a concern that later proved unfounded.) This issue is much rarer than the "With L" counterpart though many No L's were saved given that the gold dollar was a new gold denomination for the United states and these were the first issues off the press. Here's a chance to own a piece of numismatic history for what amounts to a small premium over the more common issue. (Image)

Cat No: Kellogg Restrike "1855"
"1855" Kellogg $50 Commemorative Restrike PCGS Gem Proof. These coins were created as souvenirs of the treasure recovered from the SS Central America (lost at sea on Sept 12th 1857). Authorized by the California Historical Society, mintage was limited to 5,000 pieces. Struck from authentic Kellogg & Co. dies in a proof finish w/ heavy cameo contrast, each coin was created from Kellogg and Humbert ingots recovered during the excavation of the shipwreck. The obverse depicts a head of Liberty facing left by Ferdinand Gruner, with stars around and the date below. The reverse shows a standing eagle with inscription surrounding. The tiny imprint above the eagle's head shows the striking date and the CHS initials of the California Historical Society. The weight is 1,309 grains of .887 fine gold (identical to the ingots themselves) for a total of 2.419 ozt AGW. A handsome display box accompanies the coin describing it in detail. (One of these recently sold in the Stack's Bowers June 2023 auction for $5,040.) (Image)
