1943. Service Record (Stammkarte) for Josef Kovacs; Waffen SS Mauthausen Camp Guard (listed assignment "SS T. Stuba Mauthausen/G". Born in Pressburg (Bratislava), he listed his nationality as Volksdeutsch (Ethnic German) rather than Slovakian, and with a Hungarian surname and "Hungarian" (Ungarisch) listed one of his spoken languages, was presumably of a Hungarian-German family settled in a Slovakian town filled with such. According to his record, he joined the Waffen SS in February of 1943, well into the period for recruiting foreign nationals, particularly ethnic Germans for Concentration Camp guard positions.
