Sale No: 22JE
Lot No: 20742

Plebiscite of Allenstein. 1920 (March 24) Postcard from Lyck, bearing violet "38° Reggimento Fanteria/4° Battaglione" in violet, trusted to a military courier for transmission to Italy, and consigned to the base military P.O. of Bologna with "Posta Militare/E/(Ufficio Concentramento)" cds on 8 April, this being the first dispatch of correspondence of the contingent in Allenstein, being the only one with this military usage, of great rarity. As it was the case in Upper Silesia, there was not clarity on how to handle the first dispatch of mails and this provoked some delay; it was exceptionally used the via Bologna route on this occasion only. 1920 (May-Aug) Stampless cover and postcard to Italy free of charge, from a Italian member of the Interallied Commission, both bearing blurred strikes of "Commission d'Administration et de Plébiscite /Allenstein-Olsztyn/Traité de Versailles" double circle, entering the British military mail with F.P.O. S120 cds, the card showing F.P.O. 40 transit of Cologne, the envelope showing on reverse very rare cachet of the Italian delegation and "Commissione di Governo e Plebiscito/Di Allenstein/Delegazione Italiana" endorsement. A very rare duo, as there were just three Italians in the Commission. (Image)
