THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE
1d orange-vermilion, BLOCK OF SIX, positions 1-6, good to very large all round except bottom left and right, all cancelled by rare blue numeral '1' of Mahebourg and a portion of red London ds applied in transit, some usual toning, extraordinarily fine for such an important and large multiple, exhibition showpiece (SG £108'000+)
On the reverse of the block we can see the outline of the flap of the original envelope to which it had been affixed, which is therefore not a crease.
This spectacular block in its rich bright shade clearly shows, amongst other characteristics of the earliest impression the 'sticky print' and uneven inking of the beginning period. "The impression is so early that if the paper was yellowish it would undoubtedly classify as the earliest" (Burrus 1968). We now know that several different papers were used at the same time and can confirm without doubt that this block is from the EARLIEST impression.
Arnold Rudge states "After very careful thought and examination I am convinced this block is an Earliest. There is also an amazing DOUBLE PRINT of the design best seen at lower right"
This is the LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE of the Earliest impression and of the entire Post Paid issue.

A UNIQUE FRANKING
1d red, HORIZONTAL STRIP OF THREE, position 7-9, close to very large uneven margins, all cancelled by blue numeral '1' in two concentric circles, on 1854 folded letter sheet sent locally from Mahebourg to Port Louis, showing 'MAURITIUS/GPO' crowned ds and blue bevelled framed 'Mahebourg/AU.10.1857' ds, some cover faults and creases, a very important showpiece, this being the only such franking recorded
This is possibly the finest 1d Post Paid cover on the basis of colour and shade
Rate: 3d inland letter rate. As per ordinance No. 8 and 9 of 1850, (No.8) postage on a letter not exceeding 1/2 ounce from a rural post town or village to Port Louis was 2d and (No.9) 1d was added for Town postage within Port Louis regardless of weight.

PLATE RECONSTRUCTION
2d blue, complete plate reconstruction of all twelve positions. The original plating is from the Ferrari Collection (13th October 1921, lot 398) and was purchased by Burrus. He changed 5 positions namely 2, 6, 9, 10 and 11, positions 10 and 11 being taken from the Arthur Hind reconstruction. This reconstruction includes the popular "PENOE" for "PENCE" of course in position 7. It shows a mixture of impressions from early to intermediate, mostly all with clear to good margins, some are with large margins, some faults (SG £42'000)

Rate: 4d overseas rate. Manuscript "Paid 4" indicating a further charge of 2d having been paid in cash, making the 4d overseas rate, as per the postal rates from the Government Gazette of 1st May 1858 and handstruck "8" decimes charge in black (ds on arrival in France with 8 decimes = 7 1/2 grams), under the Anglo-French Postal Convention on 1856.
