image RARE INGOING TO IRELAND WELSH ADDITIONAL ½d CHARGE ON COVER FROM BRIDPORT TO WATERFORD VIA MILFORD; 30 Mar. 1837 EL (attractive printed Bridport fishing supplies maker billhead inside; small fault at foot does not detract) to Waterford with fine "BRIDPORT" c.d.s. across the join, and so charged the 'Welsh Additional Halfpenny" "1/2½" rate via Bristol, Milford and Dromore. If routed via Holyhead and Dublin the cost would have been 1s-5d (449 land miles = 1s-2d + 1d Menai Bridge + 2d Irish Sea packet). Welsh ½d covers TO Ireland are much scarcer than those sent from Ireland.Cross Reference: WELSH POSTAL HISTORY, IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

image WELSH ADDITIONAL ½d RATE COVER EX CORK TO N. YORKSHIRE CHARGED 1s-3½d INSTEAD OF 1s-5d (VIA DUBLIN); 10 Oc t. 1839 EL from "FERMOY" (cds across join) to Skipton with red Dublin diamond transit d.s. on flap but only charged "1/3½" - including the extra Milford ½d charge. The letter did not go via Milford but the rule was that such letters could not be paid more if they were sent via Dublin than they would have been charged via Milford. The Dublin route for this letter would have cost 1s-1d (345 miles in total by land) + 2d Irish Sea packet + 1d for the Menai Bridge + 1d for the Conway Bridge = 1s-5d. So this was a rare postage discount (of 1½d). Rare thus. [See note in Robinson ref. such Yorkshire letters, foot of p.52.]Cross Reference: YORKSHIRE, IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY (Image)
