image 1883 (March): Piece from the De La Rue record book bearing at top right engraved Die Proofs of the 1867 4 d. value, the 1866 6 d. value and a lithographed Plate Proof of the 1 s. value with 'Missing Virgin', all with good margins all round and printed in black; with notations below in manuscript "Virgin Islands. The Crown Agents in their letter 10th March 1883 (C.A. vol 9, p. 85) tell us the colours to use for the ½d., 1d., and 2½d. Postage Stamps, i.e. International Colours [green, red and blue], These are the only duties we are concerned with as the other duties 4d., 6d. and 1/- are litho stamps and if they are indented again we had better recommend surface stamps with appropriate colours". image 1864 (Oct 28): Cover from Tortola to Liverpool prepaid in red manuscript '1/1 d.' with 1 s. prepaid and 1 d. Colonial credit, struck with very fine strike of the extremely rare single ring "♚ / PAID / AT / TORTOLA" handstamp in red, with fair strike of 'London EC / Paid' arrival cds below (Nov 15) in red. Reverse with TORTOLA despatch cds (Oct 28) clearly struck and Liverpool cds (Nov 16) both in black. Slight file fold but Charles Freeland / Parmenter & Gordon on page 6/29 where this cover is illustrated and discussed "an outstanding and highly important rarity", record just two items with this handstamp, one of which is only a front, thus this is the unique example on full cover Gi = £ 22'000.rnProvenance: Spink, London, June 2011.
