image COMPOUND PRINTED LOTTERY 'PUFF' (PRESUMABLY BY WHITING & BRANSTON) + COMIC PLAIN EXAMPLE; Apr. 1825 small blue & pink compound-printed handbill (neatly fits within an album page; some neatly rebacked thins do not detract) advertising one of the last lotteries of the pre-1900 period (no Agent's name included) without a Whiting & Branston imprint but clearly their style of fancy engine-turned printing around the central text; few of these Compound-printed 'puffs' have been recorded in private hands. Exhibition Item. Plus a plain black printed pictorial comic July 1825 lottery 'puff' (equally suitable for an album-page) with woodcut of a man dreaming of winning, by way of contrast to the coloured example. image EARLY PERKINS BACON BANKNOTES/TICKET/SHARE CERT. + ALFRED DEACON BRADBURY WILKINSON PROOFS; 1825 "Perkins & Heath" imprint Wellingborough Bank £5 note (creases and 1826 exhibit details on back) with fine Congreve 1s-3d red/black compound printed Tax Stamp, small blue embossed 1836 Holywell Ball Ticket with "DE LA RUE & CO" imprint inverted at top, c.1840 v. fine Craven Bank (Burnley) £10 note + 1853 "Oriental Bank" share certificate both with "Perkins Bacon & Petch" imprints, and fine pair of fancy engine-turned oval engraved background designs produced in Feb/Mar. 1881 by Charles Whiting's 1821-81 principal engraver Alfred Deacon (recently 'poached' by Bradbury Wilkinson - as of 7 Feb. 1881) from a page of Deacon's proof book (p.copy of the page included). SIVEWRIGHT" broker) with the rare Whiting & Branston imprint at foot within the fancy engine-turned frame to the central text; few of these W&B 'puffs' have been recorded in private hands. image THE FIRST (JAN./FEB. 1840) 1d PINK FORERUNNER ESSAY BY WHITING & WYON - IN BLUE (TYPE E11); Fine example of this rare Jan./Feb. 1840 early 1d Blue oval Essay on thin white paper, cut round and lightly attached to white card at top right; this is the design recorded by Whiting as "Mr Wyon's head and legend; our notion of the engine turned pattern to look well" (Huggins/Wicks, 2021, p.90, plate 82). Only a handful of examples of this design in blue have been recorded in private hands; this is similar to another cut-round example in the Bonn Postal Museum's Philbrick Collection. Exhibition Item. image PERKINS BACON PAPER TAX STAMP - LATE USAGE WITH PART "CHARGED ON MAKER" CANCEL; 23 June 1852 usage of the rare Type IV Perkins Bacon 1½d per pound “PAPER LABEL” Tax Stamp (old sellotape on reverse reinforcing cut and small tear needs to be removed) for a single ream of paper. It was used at "MILL NUMBER 614" and approved by Excise Officer “Henry Melville(?)”. It has a partial black “[Crown]/CHA[RGED ON M]AKER/PAPER/DUTY” datestamp at left and is unusually 'cancelled' by a heavy ink "X". The Tax was repealed (and stamps withdrawn) on 1 Oct. 1861.
