Orange Free State. 1900 (Mar) 1d on 1d brown type 31 surcharge (level stops) ERROR OF COLOUR in mint horizontal strip of 3 (two stamps mint nh), showing offsets of surcharge on reverse, left stamp with minor gum creasing and one short perf, a very fine and very rare multiple (SG £1'650+)
Note: For the background see Buckley and Marriott vol II p.81 and now Hisey and Bartshe vol I pp 146-7. The original reports suggested that possibly as few as 50 were surcharged.
