image VERY EARLY INGOING COVER TO SCOTLAND - FROM AMSTERDAM TO DOUGLAS (LANARKS.); 23 Sept. 1680 EL from "Amsterdam" addressed to "Mr William Somervell, portioner of Douglas" (this Douglas being in Lanarkshire about 23 miles SE of Glasgow) with fine red wax seal but apparently privately carried. The writer mentions his having sent a previous letter "by ye London Post now neare a month ago" but not having had a reply. If sent by post this letter would have cost 1s-3d per sheet (8d to London + 5d on to Edinburgh + 2d on to Douglas) so there was a good incentive to use private means to have it carried across the North Sea! Late 17th century letters from Scotland to Holland (the Andrew Russell correspondence) are quite often seen, but letters sent the other way at this date are rare. Cross Reference: EARLY LETTERS, NETHERLANDS (Image)
