image 1873 ABERGELDIE CASTLE ENV. & LETTER: Env. franked 1d red (pl. 165, SG143) tied by v. fine "ABERDEEN/D/SP20/73?1" duplex with accompanying letter paper, both imprinted "ABERGELDIE CASTLE/ABERDEEN". The letter states "General Sir William Knollys is desired by the Price and Princess of Wales to return their best thanks to Mr [Thomas] Dowson for the song on 'The Betrothal of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Grand Duchess of [sic] Maria of Russia' which he has forwarded for their Royal Highnesses acceptance". image VERY RARE ABERGELDIE CASTLE CANCELLATIONS: 20 Aug 1955 envs. & PPCs bearing 2d or 2½d Wildings cancelled by "ABERGELDIE CASTLE/ABERDEEN" cds's. This postmark was in use for only 2-3 hours at a sale of works to raise funds for the repair of Crathie Church, the Royal family's place of worship when resident at Balmoral Castle. The stalls at the fete were manned entirely by members of the Royal family & the Royal household. Probably the scarcest of all the modern "temporary" postmarks.
