image THIRD MAHRATTA WAR - BATTLE OF SOONEE; Remarkable & fine 17 Apr. 1818 letter (no cover; faint folds and endorsed 'L Colonel C.J.Doyle' (Military Secretary to the Governor General of India; as the intended addressee) at the end of the letter. Datelined 'Camp Seiynyn in Soonelly' with content by Colonel Sir John William Adams, Commander of the British Forces on the day of the Battle of Soonee;"......we have at length got a very blow at the Peishwas whole force.....I marched at 9pm last night and arrived 22 miles at Pupulkotee by three this morning., finding Bajee Raw had left.....a few rounds from the Horse artillery Iron made his advance guard fall back.....the fruits of this affair are......four elephants, upward of 120 camel.......three or four hundred of the enemy killed......" image INDIA LETTER/HASTINGS - PAIR OF COVERS EX MADRAS/CAWNPORE; 1 Feb./27 June 1831 pair of ELs (full typed transcripts of both; newsy family letters) from "St. Thomas's Mount [Madras]" or from "On the River [Ganges, Cawnpore]" to Cornwall/Edinburgh each with a mainly very fine boxed "INDIA LETTER/HASTINGS" on the flap (one with closed tear from seal). The first has a mainly fine oval "MADRAS/GPO/SHIP LETTER" oval d.s. and was carried "Per Zenobia"; the other has a poor (as so often) large 2-ring "CAWNPORE/POST OFFICE" Paid mark with manuscript "9 [annas]" in centre and "2 July" beneath. image NAGA HILLS/DALFA EXPEDITION - THE FIRST RECORDED COVER; Remarkable 1 Aug. 1874 env. to Debrogush, Upper Assam and franked QV ½a tied by "SHILLONG/388" duplex (no year slug) and two ms. lines. Rear with "GOWHATTY and DEBROOGHUR" d.s. Addressed to Major Cory/Commanding 44th NI (Native Infantry) who marched a force of the 42nd, 43rd & 44th into the Dalpha Hills the previous November following disturbances with the Naga Tribes. Rare 2 Mar. 1889 env; (opened out; few peripheral faults) to England headed 'No stamps available' and 'Chin Field Force' and endorsed by a major of the Norfolk Regt. Struck with the circular bold seriffed "T" and "LB/5D" h.s. on front.
