1849, Eight envelope-content double pages written from the Captain Fanshawe, Commander of the H.M.S.Daphne with account of his voyage from Montevideo (at this time the scene of foghting between the Argentinians and the Uruguayans during a siege lasting nine years from 1843 to 1852. Cpt. Fanshawe observes the curb stones are composed from horses skulls! He meets the new Gouverneur of the Falklands who lives in a small wooden tenement smaller than most peasants cottages in England. The island has ca. 230/240 inhabitants, 60.000 of wild cattle and much drunkeness. Then round Cap Horn and St.Elmos Lights! To Valparaiso and mention of this trip to Pircairn, can the island sustain 140 people. Fanshawe intends to land a bull, cow and rabbits for the families on the island. a fascinationg group of letters, perhaps the earliest mention of the Picairn Islands in a letter. (Image)
