image Falkland Islands: 1914 (Nov. 28) Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes/Punta Arenas stampless envelope addressed to the Manager of the Falkland Islands Company in Port Stanley showing the extremely rare manuscript "Passed Censor/TNG/28.11.1914" endorsement in red ink added by T.N. Goddard, carried on the whalecatcher "Almirante Goni" which arrived at Stanley from Punta Arenas on Nov. 22. Heijtz certificate (2012). Ex Heijtz and Riddell-Carre. Photo. Thomas Nelson Goddard (1887-1935) was from Apr. 1914 to Feb. 1915 Private Secretary to the Governor and a lieutenant in the Falkland Islands Volunteer Corps. Goddard later served in the colonial service in West Africa and published in 1925 "The Handbook of Sierra Leone", reporting on the country where he died prematurely of fever whilst Acting Governor. This is one of only four known examples with this World War I censor marking, sent during the period of uncertainty following the German naval victory at the Battle of Coronel. Censorship in the U.K. and the majority of the colonies and dominions commenced during Aug. 1914 but no clear guidance was issued from London how this should be carried out. (Image1)
