image Falkland Islands Dependencies: South Georgia: 1936 (Aug. 16) envelope to Withington, Manchester bearing Centenary 11/2d. tied by SG2 c.d.s., roughly opened with flap missing and repaired at top but with original enclosure, a Christmas greetings message from S.H. Creese dated “May:17:36”. Sydney Herbert Creese was born in Yardley, Birmingham in 1888 and worked as a teacher before and after distinguished service in W.W.I . It is thought that Rev. Launcelot Fleming, chief scientist and chaplain for the visiting British Graham Land Expedition had been among Creese’s students and had obliged his former teacher by assisting in Creese’s plan to send novelty Christmas greetings from this unusual location. Covers from Fleming to Creese during the Expedition have also been recorded (see Grosvenor auction 92, 20 Nov 2014, lot 4071). Expedition vessel “Penola” had arrived in Stromness Bay on Aug. 12 where she was thoroughly overhauled before departing on Oct. 2. Photo. (Image1)
