RARE POST OFFICE NOTICE OF NEW STRICTER RULES ON FREE FRANKINGS: 21 Aug. 1784 General Post Office notice to "all Postmasters", sent by Anthony Todd (Secretary of the Post Office). We have never seen this example before; few Post Office notices from pre-1800 survive, and thus rare. A fine example!Cross Reference: P.O. NOTICES (Image)

TO JAMAICA - OUTGOING FREE FRANK (ABUSE OF PRIVILEGE!) FROM LONDON TO "ST. JAMES', JAMAICA"; 2 Dec. 1824 EL (part family letter from the addressee's wife and child) - probably from their home in Brighton (a Nov. 1824 letter from this correspondence is known that was sent from Brighton to London to be forwarded) franked from "London" to "Garland Grove, St. James's, Jamaica" franked by an unidentified senior civil servant - one of the few with franking rights to the West Indies who was clearly abusing his privilege for a lady friend in this case! - with a fine red London crowned "FREE" d.s., and with no British or Jamaican charges at all. Free Franks to the West Indies are rare.Cross Reference: JAMAICA, OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image)
