image UNIQUE(?) 'DOUBLE ADDRESS' COVER EX CALAIS TO LONDON AT RARE RYE(?) 2d RATE - "DEN[ARI]I IJ PORTO"; Fine 11 Dec. 1600 EL (neatly folded to show both address-panels side by side; with typed translation) from “Callais” to London; it was originally folded and addressed with the annotation “porto” [carry this], but it was then opened and re-folded (presumably by the sender?) and again addressed. This time it was endorsed “den[ar]i ij porto” [2d to pay for carriage], which was the rate . Perhaps the sender added a last-minute PS and only then negotiated the postal rate for the carriage of this letter across the Channel. Only 12 Corsini letters with their rates expressed in "denarii" (pence) were recorded, and only 11 of any kind at 2d rates, one of which was sent from Rye in 1586. Exhibition Item.
