image The Helen Davis Collection of Penguins: Falkland Islands Dependencies: South Georgia: 1934 (Apr. 11) rare commercial envelope from the “Discovery” (crest on flap) sent from Georgia bearing ‘Whale & Penguin’ 1d. cancelled SG2, addressed to Ensign Davis of the “Bear of Oakland/Byrd’s Antarctic Expedition/Via Postmaster/New York City” and subsequently readdressed to the “U.S.S. ASTORIA/U.S. NAVAL STATION/TUTUILA/AMER. SAMOA” with rank corrected and Dunedin July 16 transit. The two ships had held a rendezvous on Feb. 21 to enable the transfer of 21 tons of supplies and a replacement physician, Dr. Louis H. Potaka, this letter presumably resulting from that contact.
