1817 (May 10): Entire letter to London annotated 'Duplicate' at left, Adams correspondence, struck on despatch with superb oval 'CAPE OF GOOD HOPE / 20 MAY 20 / 1817 / PACKET LETTER' datestamp in black. The entire rated (on reverse also) at 3/6d. in manuscript to pay. London arrival cds on reverse (July 25) in red. A marvellous strike of this very rare marking with just ten examples recorded. Provisional Issue 1861 (Feb 23): Woodblock 1 d. pale milky blue Error of Colour - with the 1 d. printed in the colour of the 4 d., a used example with large even margins on the angled sides, ample margin at base, somewhat unfortunately cancelled by CGH obliterator over the ONE of ONE PENNY but clearly discernable, small crease in lower right corner and a small paper inclusion, otherwise very fine and extremely rare. Provisional Issue 1861 (March): Woodblock 1 d. carmine on laid paper, a used square pair, just touched at left with clear large margins on three sides and sheet marginal, incomplete scissor cut touching the design of one stamp of the pair, prior to application on 1861 cover to 'Natal' with Perkins Bacon 1853 4 d. blue on blued paper, with just clear to large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp, tied by bold strikes of CGH obliterators in black. Reverse with oval framed PORT ELIZABETH datestamp in red (May 27). The cover has an ironed horizontal crease and has been re-backed internally to prevent the central crease, away from the stamps, becoming worse, this being done prior to the Pack sale. A sensational and most attractive cover with a rare multiple and mixed issue franking. Cert. BPA (2018).rnNote: The addressee, George C. Cato, was an agent for hunters and traders wishing to visit KwaZulu Natal. He fought against the Boers in 1842 and arranged the sad Elephant hunting for Ivory: a noted example being 95 shot in a single day. Provisional Issue 1861 (April 12): Woodblock 4 d. (deep) bright blue on laid paper (Gi 14c, BPA cert. 1990) or Woodblock 4 d. blue on laid paper (Gi 14d, cert. RPSL (2019), an unused example with large margins all round and close but well clear at lower right, of fine impression (almost over-inked) and in an astonishing rich colour, tiny thin spot on the top of 'G' of GOOD mentioned for absolute accuracy and not impinging on the appearance in any way; fresh and very fine, unused without gum.rnrnThis example originally turned up in a general collection in the early 1960's, found by Robin Taylor of London & Brighton Auctions which he ran with Ted Proud, it remained in his estate until 1990. The BPA certificate issued in 1990 states "deep bright blue" Gi 14c = £ 120'000. However, when sold in our 2019 auction with this description, the stamp was then submitted by Corinphila on behalf of the buyer to the Royal Philatelic Society in London who issued a certificate (September, 2019) stating 'blue' Gi 14d = £ 32'000 and thus also a very rare stamp in unused condition and stating 'light surface soiling' which is imperceptible even under magnification. Neither certificate mentions the minute thin spot on the top of the 'G' referred to in our original description. The stamp is therefore, with our thanks to the owner, re-offered on its merits, with both the conflicting certificates which can be seen on our internet site. De La Rue Printing 1863/64: 6 d. bright mauve, a fine pair with good to large margins all round, in a deep resonant shade, caused by file fold caused by the original content, used on 1864 cover endorsed 'Per Roman' from Cape Town to Forres, Scotland cancelled by numeral "1" obliterator in black. 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' datestamp at left in black (Aug 20). PAID / DEVONPORT / CAPE PACKET datestamp at right (Sept 24) in red. Reverse with large red wax seal (Standard Bank of British South Africa) and Forres arrival cds (Sept 26) in black. Contents include an appraisal of the Bank Manager in Bloemfontein and the message "Bloemfontein is 1000 miles from this place and you must not forget that in the Orange Free State men are very tricky and unscrupulous and frequently score out their friends in this Colony as the Freebooters did of old on the borders of Scotland".
