Illustrated in 'The Stamps of Barbados' by Edmund Bayley on colour plate IV. A remarkable block of fabulous colour and truly stunning appearance, this being the largest multiple of the grass-green imperforate Gi = £ 8'500+.rnProvenance: Collection Major T. Bayley, Harmers, London, 24 Oct 1990, lot 557.rnrnNote: The Edmund Bayley collection, sold in 1990, was unfortunately collected in Barbados and became subjected to a degree of tropicalisation, thus the gum, always slightly browned in the first instance with this variety, has sensibly been removed from this multiple to avoid deterioration. image Rough perforation 14 to 16 1861/70: 1 s. blue, Error of Colour, rough perforation 14 to 16, an unused example of this famous stamp, centred to base showing portion of the adjoining stamp, infintessimal trace of aging but of fine fresh colour, unused without gum. A world rarity with just nine examples believed to exist, one of which is in the Tapling collection at the British Library and another is housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A wonderful stamp. Signed R. Goebel. Cert. RPSL (1984) Gi = £ 18'000.rnNote: All of the 'unused' examples were manuscript cancelled by the Colonial Secretary with a pen cross to prevent re-use and the pen crosses have in most cases been removed since. The Colonial Secretary, Jas. R. Holligan, stated in a letter to Perkins Bacon (Sept 25, 1863) "only a few having been disposed of for a postage label album".rnProvenance: Collection Hodsell Hurlock, Harmers, London, 16-24 June 1958, lot 296. This being the finer of the two examples in the Hurlock collection, the other (lot 297) was also in the Lickfold, Leslie Wheeler and Joseph Hackmey collections and is illustrated in 'The Stamps of Barbados' by Edmund Bayley on page 43. It has a straight edge at right.rnCollection Dempsey J. Prappas, Shreves, New York, 17-18 March 1995, lot 81. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image)
