image 1860 2½p Bright Orange Rose, No Watermark, Imperforate An exceptionally fresh and very rarely seen mint single with the small horizontal SPECIMEN handstamp overprint in black, displaying fabulous colour, ample to large margins and a large portion of its characteristic dull, white original gum. A very rare stamp in flawless condition, VF OG Provenance: Dr. Conrad Latto, Christie's (New York), March 1993; Lot 981 During our research we were able to locate only one other example; it resided in the famous Wellburn Collection (October 1988; Lot 1070). image 1871 (January) Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank in black on U.S. 6c dark red on white entire, employed as a paste-up envelope, light central fold and no addressee as customary, handstamp "For Great Britain / and Ireland" applied in Victoria (according to Postal Convention of July 1st, 1870), 5c bright red, perf 14 stamp pays the Colonial postage for outgoing mail and U.S. 6c for the letter rate to the U.K.; rate was reduced from 10c to 6c prepaid in early 1871. Stamp and indicia neatly cancelled / tied by segmented corks, clear oval Wells, Fargo & Co. / JAN 12 / Victoria datestamp in blue, partial clear US transit and neat small Edinburgh FE 9 71 CDS struck on arrival. Pencil by expert Herbert Bloch; a desirable express cover in an excellent state of preservation with superior overall freshness. It is reported that only six such covers exist and this one certainly ranks among the finest, VF (Unitrade 9) Expertization: 1979 Friedl certificate, signed by expert H.
