1d red, VERTICAL STRIP OF FOUR, positions 2/5/8/11, just touched bottom left to large even margins, all tied or cancelled by clear neat target cancels, on 1859 folded letter sheet sent from Port Louis via 'P. Northum via Marseille' to Paris with red 'PAYS ETR. V. SUEZ/12.SEP.59/A.M.B.D' cds alongside, with 'MAURITIUS/GPO' crowned bs, some cover faults, creases, stamps and cover pressed and cleaned, a very important showpiece

1d red, vertical pair, positions 1/4, good to very large uneven margins, neatly tied by bevelled framed 'Black River/MR.1.1859' ds, on large part cover front sent within Mauritius to Grand Port, fine and the use of local letters addressed for delivery within a town or village are rare, apparently a unique usage

2d blue, position 12, close to large margins and neatly tied by framed boxed 'BLACK RIVER/JA.9.1858', on 1858 folded entire from Black River via "overland mail" to La Fleche, France, with an array of transit and arrival markings on front and reverse, covers faults and repaired by reinforcements, an attractive usage, apparently unique
Rate: 4d overseas rate. Manuscript "Paid 4" indicating a further charge of 2d having been paid in cash, making the 4d overseas rate, as per the postal rates from the Government Gazette of 1st May 1858 and handstruck "8" decimes charge in black (ds on arrival in France with 8 decimes = 7 1/2 grams), under the Anglo-French Postal Convention on 1856.
