image c.1908 Somerset House sample pages and letters concerning Cypher stamps and their application to documents, an interesting group affixed into a booklet including Vellum pieces each bearing six embossed revenue stamps with "Specimen" overprints (3 pieces, one showing formalin treatment to three stamps, the others with cypher labels used to affix three of the six stamps); vellum piece with embossed "Allsop & Sons" seals; vellum pieces (4) bearing cypher labels affixed with aluminium escutcheons all franked with various chemicals to test if they could be removed from documents; unused strip of twenty cypher labels; De La Rue letter recommending the continued use of glue to affix cypher labels; notes on "Cementation" adhesive; notes on the cost of cypher stamps; a series of De La Rue notes on aluminium escutcheons and how they reacted to various chemical treatments, etc. An interesting lot.
