image INTERESTING OLD LETTERS, PETERLOO MASSACRE, STRANGEWAYS JAIL, ETC: c.1730-1902 diverse group of items incl. Sep. 1819 EL penned 6 weeks after the 16 Aug. "Peterloo Massacre" in St. Peter's Fields, Manchester. From Lt. Col. Dalrymple, commander of the 15th Hussars, one of the units involved, to a relative in Gloucestershire. Transcript provided. Also 1783 legal doc. with tax stamps, 1877 official prison lettersheet (censor signed) from a female prisoner in Salford Hundred County Prison (Strangeways) to her brother, and subsequently letter from the brother to a Westmoreland solicitor; fine 4 Feb. 1826 "Prices Current" ex Manchester Corn Exchange and a couple of late QV printed commercial envs. (9 items) (Image)

image OLDHAM - EARLY MARKS: 1812-41 group incl. Apr. 1818 EL with scarce, 'underlined' "OLDHAM*N2" mark in red (believed used 1818 only), Oct. 1820 EL with Type I "OLDHAM/No.2" in 'scalloped' oval, Jul. 1822 EL with curved "OLDHAM/No.2" (probably the same handstamp used 1819-21, but with the 'scalloped' oval frame removed!), Feb. 1824 EL with Type 2 "OLDHAM/No.2" in scalloped oval, but with larger letters than previous. Also two 1841 ELs with double circle "OLDHAM/[fleuron]" marks, one in red, one in black. A good lot. (8) (Image)
