image ½p Queen Victoria Trial colour plate proof block of nine in black on india, vertical SPECIMEN in carmine; originating from the untrimmed plate of 120 subjects, showing nearly full ABNC imprint to left and the very elusive Strong Re-entry (Position 26) with visible marks in "GE" of "POSTAGE", above the last "A" of "CANADA" etc. Natural india wrinkling, a Fine and very elusive plate imprint positional block.

A very scarce positional multiple (and plate variety - first reported in the 1929 Jarrett handbook on page 21) from the original plate of 120 subjects. This plate was later trimmed down to 100 subjects to fit the new perforating machine used for production of the perforated pence issue of 1858-59 (Scott #11-13). This was achieved by removing the first two vertical columns of stamps (which included the variety at Position 26), also resulting in there being no imprints at left. The rarity of this item is confirmed by a review of the half pence proofs sheets in the famous ABNC sale offered as single lots - all were sheets of 100 subjects. (Image)

image 1858 ½p Rose on Soft Vertically Ribbed Paper, Imperforate An impressive used vertical strip of five on this rarely seen paper type, devoid of the usual flaws that plague most known examples.
