1855 (March 28) Folded lettersheet mailed to Youghall, Ireland, bearing a single 6p olive yellow with clear to full margins, tied by two blue oval grid '8' numeral cancels of Chatham, same-ink double arc MR28 dispatch, W.O. Douglastown MR 28 and portion of Bend of Petitcodiac transit backstamps. Red manuscript "Paid 1½" and additional "Paid 7½ cy" manuscript visible under the stamp (lifted to reveal the rate manuscript in its entirety and hinged back). An interesting and highly unusual dual mode of payment for the newly reduced 7½ pence rate to United Kingdom, F-VF (Unitrade 2) As the British packet rate of 15 pence was reduced to 7½p as of August 1st, 1854, virtually all covers to United Kingdom are franked with a bisected 3 pence stamp to make up the necessary rate. Only one other cover is known franked with a single 6p stamp with the remaining 1½p paid in cash. A similar rate / franking cover is known, also dated on March 28, 1855 from the same sender, addressed to Waterford, Ireland (ex. Wilkinson, Carr, Schneider). (Image)

1863 (April 23) Blue folded cover in an excellent state of preservation from the famous Boyd correspondence, displaying an outstanding franking to Newfoundland with 1c Locomotive strip of three and 12½c Steamship pair, light fold touches a 1c stamp with small tear. Each stamp tied by light oval mute grid cancel, showing four backstamps - W.O. Douglastown AP 23, Chatham AP 23, Sackville AP 24 and St. John AP 27, St. John's, Newfoundland MY 3 receiver. Prepays the 28c double weight letter rate, red crayon "8" denoting packet rate (8d sterling or 16c currency) credit accountancy mark for the Halifax to St. John's British Packet sea voyage.
