image WAR OF THE GRAND ALLIANCE (OR 9 YEARS WAR) - CAMPAIGN COVER EX "PARK ABBY CAMP" (LOUVAIN, BELGIUM); Fine early 18 June 1693 EL (internal heading folds neatly to display beside the address-panel) - written in English - from "Camp as Park Abby" [near Louvain] to the writer's brother in "London" charged "8[d]" with a partly fine "IV/[19?]" London Foreign Branch arrival Bishop Mark on the flap. the contents begin; "Last Tuesday the Enemy marched from Jambleur, and are encamped within a small League of this Camp, fronting our Lyne, the out Guards being within less than an English mile of each other. But there are several dry ditches and passes between us, of which we may have the entire possession, by which we may fall upon them, at any time, or cutt of their rear upon the march, if we can persuade them to go first. All things are very scarce in the Enemy's Camp, and all plenty (tho' dear) in ours, except Forrage which begins to be scarce.... [discussion of the Enemy's thwarted plans to take Louvain, Liege, Maastricht, etc.]... [but] we shall shall stick so close to 'em that it will be impossible for them to take any of those places this year. This Army is reinforced with severall Regiments of Horse and Foot, tho' it's reported the Enemy are 20,000 stronger than we.... Thomas Moore. [PS] Last night the Enemy fired 70 pieces of Cannon 3 times and 3 Rounds of small Shott for joy of taking Rose in Cattallonia...". A rare cover from this important Campaign fought by France against the Grand Alliance of England, Holland, Austria & Spain under the personal command of William III.
