1852 SINKING OF HMS " BIRKENHEAD": 1852-1886 group of covers & contents relating to the sinking of HMS "Birkenhead" near the Cape of Good Hope , 26 Feb. 1852, an event later to be remembered for acts of heroism and the so-called "Birkenhead drill" for the evacuation of 'women & children first'.
